If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997,  in order to tow trailers and gain entitlement to category B+E and all larger vehicles, you may have to pass an additional driving test.

All drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 retain their existing entitlement to tow trailers until their licence expires. This means they are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. They also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM.

For full information on what vehicles can tow what trailers, with which licence, please click HERE

Like all our tuition, our towing training is tailored around your individual needs, if you have never towed a trailer at all,we will start with a small car & trailer, & work up untill you are confident to move onto something larger, but if for example you grew up on a farm, & have been towing agricultural trailers all your life, you could bring your own horse-box, & we would concentrate on adapting your skills to road use, to enable you to pass the B+E test.

What you have to realise, is that the B+E test is not easy, because its not just your towing skills that are tested. The standard of driving required is very high, it is like taking your "L" test again, but with the added requirement of knowing how to handle a trailer.

So, in general, the longer you  have been driving since you passed your test, the harder you will find it to remove any bad habits that have developed.

The test is carried out in an LGV driving test centre and lasts about one and a half hours. A much higher standard of driving than the car test is required to pass. To pass the test you must complete a reversing and braking exercise followed by a road drive. Back at the test centre you will then have to uncouple and re couple the trailer safely, and answer some safety questions

.

The only way to decide how long this training will take is to assess your current skills, This will need a 2 hour assessment, for which we charge our normal lesson rates.
